Scotch and Carbonated Oxidane

Golly. I was surprised to learn that the systematic IUPAC name for OH2 is Oxidane. Check out Table 2.1 Mononuclear Hydrides in this IUPAC nomenclature recommendations document.  And to think, I’ve been calling it “water” all these years.  How embarrassing.

    It sure beats the dihydromonoxide (DHMO) that some idiots are pushing. Don’t get me wrong, I love the satire aimed at chemophobes, but I despise the DHMO name, and have met people who think that it’s really the name for it.
