Wow. Just got approval to give a talk at the upcoming ACS meeting in SF next March. Didn’t think it’d be so easy to get. Cripes. Now I have to get an actual talk together.

All you have to do is say that you’re the Gaussling and you can get into where ever you want. (They may quickly kick you back out, but that’s a different story.)
Well, I got approval from my boss. I still have to convince the gate keepers at ACS to let me in.
Great – See you at Clift Hotel for drinks.
Great. Hey! I want to visit some old cinnabar mine sites while I am out there. Are you aware of where these things might be?
There probably many more but the closest is in South San Jose : http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/parks/parksarticle?path=%2Fv7%2FParks%20and%20Recreation%2C%20Department%20of%20(DEP)%2FHistorical%20and%20Cultural&contentId=cbd598ba77784010VgnVCM10000048dc4a92____

I think I’m going to spend a couple vacation days out there and visit some of these toutista mines. The kid will be in Costa Rica on a field trip- Isla Sorna \;-).
“Now I have to get an actual talk together.”
This is an ACS meeting, not something serious. I suggest doing it all in mime (white-face optional). My guess is you’re one of the token Americans they let in to provide diversity. I predict in ten years, all ACS meetings will be held in China.
Hey! Mime is a great idea!!! I was thinking about Kabuki theatre.
You’ve had a number of very insightful posts concerning the role of highly reactive materials in industrial synthesis. How about a frank talk about that, comparing the use of reactives to the alternatives, and why in many situations reactives make the most sense (and what those situations are)?
Might be difficult to get approval at home, and it is generally off-topic as far as ACS meetings go. It would have fit nicely in the joint ACS/AICHE meeting a while back.
That is an interesting point. Sounds like the basis of a session, actually. What might be useful is a session on the use of reactives and how various speakers came to grips with the associated hazards. I don’t exactly want to be a cheerleader for the use of reactive compounds, but I would like to see a bit of pushback on the trend towards risk aversion in American industry.
The abstract submission interface worked very well. I beat the deadline by a few days for once.
