Fox Investigates Chem Labs

Good God.  Fox News in Philly is now investigating university chemistry labs for “high risk” chemicals.  The shabby quality of this piece is beyond words. The entire thrust is this- Chemicals as bomb raw materials. An invitation to walk right in and grab all the corrosives and explosives you can.

Note the law enforcement images alluding to sinister threats and the fear mongering.  It’s what these people do. Manufacturing consent.

I walked into a Canadian undergrad lab to see glass-fronted wooden cabinets storing bottles of chemicals, including a nominally full kilogram bottle of benzilic acid. The US military chemical weapon of choice was one step from benzilic acid. I therefore queried the Hominid in Charge about the wisdom of such display and accessibility, “We keep the cabinets locked.”

Huge bulk industrial antioxidant Irganox 1010 is two steps to PETN high explosive. Common BHT food preservative is two steps to a pretty, one molecule of which kills one mitochondrion. Cosmetic ingredient triethanolamine is one step to a silicone with LD_50 micrograms/kg. A certain haloacetophenone is femtomolar lethal. Read the MSDS for HPLC water. BAN EVERYTHING.

Wow, Fox29 is really scraping the dregs of media. How can anyone take this reporter seriously? He can’t even pronounce “drawers” or “access”!

Oh no! Liquid nitrogen dewars! Run for your lives!

As citizens we should be more deliberative on who we allocate broadcast bandwidth to. Simpletons with cash can go a long way in our culture.
